Still, you need a relatively fast and loaded Mac for acceptable gaming performance with many popular PC titles. Insignia's premise that an inexpensive, bare-bones DOS emulator will attract users who want to run PC games on their Mac is believable, and RealPC's low price makes it affordable to a wide variety of users. While performance was acceptable on our 8500, RealPC was unusably slow on the Performa. RealPC's spooling approach for printing, which is different than VirtualPC's, is faster and more reliable.
We also installed Microsoft Word 97 and Microsoft Excel 97 and found them quite usable. RealPC features SoundBlaster and joystick support. Both the sound and response to controls was smoother on RealPC when playing Lucasarts Entertainment Company LLC's Dark Forces and X-Wing, and 3D Realms Entertainment's Duke Nukem 3D. Some games ran better on RealPC than VirtualPC, however. A side-by-side benchmark comparison with VirtualPC based on Winbench 97 using the same Mac configuration showed no clearly superior product. Thus, we were not surprised that RealPC's results were comparable to those of other emulation packages but significantly lower than any Pentium-based computer.

If you plan to run Windows or Windows 95 with RealPC, Insignia recommends at least 24 Mbytes of RAM and 200 Mbytes of available disk space. You can install Windows 3.x or Windows 95, but these licenses must be purchased separately. RealPC will run on any PowerPC-based computer running System 7.1.2 or later it also needs at least 16 Mbytes of RAM and 40 Mbytes of disk space.
